Tuesdays have gone to the dogs

Ben had his usual physical therapy today, but this time there was a therapy dog!

It was really neat and so cute. At first he was a little nervous about the dog and practically climbed up his therapist, Patty. I guess he knows his mom won't protect him! Haha. He warmed up very quickly to the dog. It was a huge - and I mean HUGE - golden retriever. I don't I've ever seen a dog that big before and I'm pretty sure Ben hasn't either because he kept making neighing horse sounds. Hee hee.

He took the dog for a long walk (well, more like a run - his therapist makes him work!) all around the hospital. The dog would do Ben's obstacle course and then Ben would do it. They went up and down the stairs together several times and through a tunnel. By the end of it all, Ben was giving that horse-dog pats and hugs. It was so cute.

Sorry I don't have pictures for you, but...well, you guessed it...I've broken yet another camera! Why don't they make these point-and-shoot pocket cameras durable!? The last camera I take complete responsibility for...my expectations aren't so high that I expect cameras to survive a trip through the washing machine. But this latest camera has no excuse! Grrrrrr. I'll break down and pony up the cash for a new one eventually. Anybody want to recommend a camera?

Ben's little sister is doing well. Not much to report except that she seems to be enjoying the whole no-diabetes things as much as I am. Girls love cookies! Mike was kind enough to point out that I've baked cookies nearly every day for the last week. Ben has had enough exposure to Sesame Street and enough experience with cookies that whenever he wants a cookie he now says....

"Eeeee aaaaa ooo-eeeeee!!!!!!"

Translation: "Me want cookie!!!!!" (Cookie Monster style)

Different is good

Sorry we've been so long in updating! No news is good news in our world, I promise.

We had a faaaabulous time visiting family and friends in Ohio, but Ben is also very glad to be back home with all his old toys, his kitty cats, and especially his dada. His dada took him to the pool this weekend and the boys had a blast.

No news on the medical front for Ben. Still waiting to find out if the nephrologist and urologist agreed on when to do the next blood test. Ben has a kidney ultrasound and appointment with his urologist in mid-February. He will also have a speech therapy evaluation at that time. We've set up his appointments to line up with his friend's surgery. Maybe you remember Ezra? He's a VACTERL pal and he and Ben were born at the same hospital and transferred to the same NICU. Now he'll be having the same surgery, with the same surgeon, at the same hospital as Ben. Small world, no? We figure if we're going to spend a few days at the Ronald McDonald House we might as well be there with friends.

As for the new baby...different is good!

* She's been moving and kicking and doing god-knows-what in there at all hours. WAY more active than I remember Ben being.

* She had another in-depth ultrasound last week and everything again looks good - 2 kidneys, beautiful heart, a totally complete spine, 3 vessel cord, and she's measuring in the 50th percentile...much larger than Ben ever measured in ultrasounds. I've been on aspirin therapy since the first ultrasound to help a minor placental blood flow issue we were concerned about and things look good there now.

* And for the most exciting news (well, I suppose it shouldn't be *quite* as exciting as having prenatal tests coming back good, but...) - this mama doesn't have diabetes this time!!!!!!! I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with Ben and I've been told I have up to an 80% chance of having it in future pregnancies. I failed the 1-hour test and had to take the 3-hour and was pretty sure I would fail it. I was so sure, in fact, that I went ahead and researched which glucometer and test strips would be the cheapest, cleared out my calendar this week so I could schedule nutritionist and endocrinologist appointments, and planned out low-carb meals for the week. But no!!!! Anybody who knows me knows how much I love my sweets. I AM SO HAPPY!!!

And here she is...
